  4. Group Chairman’s Report

    Activities
First of all, I think it’s worth saying that we’ve had a good year for activities. Lots of things have been done, that I haven’t got time to list, and we’ve kept the youngsters well occupied.
Once upon a time, we had a policy of being a boys-only group, but those days are past, and we now have girl beavers and cubs, though as yet no scouts. The first girl Cub is expected to move up to Scouts in September.

    Fund Raising
We hold several fund-raising events each year, of which the major one is the Jumble Sale, held in February. These fund-raisers help keep the subscriptions down while still allowing us to provide a wide range of activities. We always need a few extra hands at these activities, so although I said you weren’t going to be press-ganged, I will make a plea now for you to do your best to volunteer a bit of your time when you are asked.
On a smaller scale, we also run a couple of coffee mornings each year, one plant sale, which this year brought in about £400, and we usually help with the town council’s band concerts by setting out their chairs, though this year we’ve stepped down from this, so that the income can go to others who are more in need.

There’ll be more about finance in a minute.

    Thanks
Finally for this part of the agenda, a word of thanks to everyone that helps with the Group. Not everyone realises that all of our leaders and helpers are unpaid volunteers, who give up their time to help our children. That includes not only those of us in front of you here, but also those who are out and about at the moment keeping the kids amused. Please give them your fullest support, and if you’re asked to lend a hand once in a while, please try to respond positively.
Special thanks, as always, to Brian, our Group Scout Leader for the amount of time and effort he devotes to the Group.

  5. To receive Group accounts

Copies of the accounts were available to those present. The Group Treasurer briefly commented on the current healthy state of the Group, with some £18,000 in capital reserves, and on the fact that the Group is experiencing difficulty in getting reliable payment of subscriptions. Action is being taken to try to resolve this issue.
No comments were received from the floor.

  6. Group Scout Leader’s Report

    To be provided

  7. Group Scout Leader’s nomination of Group Chairman
The Group Scout Leader nominated Nick Porter to remain in the post of Chairman. There were no objections.

  8. Election of Group Treasurer
Helen Charters had agreed to remain as Group Treasurer. With no objection, nor alternative nomination, this was carried.

  9. Election of Group Secretary
John Taylor had agreed to remain as Group Secretary. With no objection, nor alternative nomination, this was carried.

  10. Group Scout Leader’s nomination of members of Group Executive Committee
The Group Scout Leader nominated Margaret Phillips, Julie Atkins and Katrina Pratt to serve on the Group Executive Committee. There were no objections.

  11. Nomination and election of additional members of Group Executive
No additional nominations for Group Executive membership were received.

  12. Appointment of Auditor
The treasurer reported that, with the retirement of the current auditor, a new auditor had been appointed for the coming year.

  13. Any other Business
David Betterton, acting on behalf of the District Commissioner, reported that Dunstable District was the best performing district in the county, in terms of proportional growth over the last year. Within Dunstable District, the 5th was the best performing group. David congratulated the Group on its growth, which hopefully marked the end of a few recent years of poor numbers.
David also presented a certificate of membership to Rob Tabone, who has recently joined as a Beaver Helper, and a certificate of 30 years service to Scouting to our secretary, John Taylor.

  14. Prayers
The Group Scout Leader closed the meeting with a prayer.
